Martinez, Alejandro Garcia de la Cadena; Kocogullari, DilayThis practice-based inquiry critiques the commodification of Frida Kahlo’s image in fashion, a phenomenon termed “Fridamania.” It argues that this commercial trend engages in “aesthetic flattening,” decontextualizing Kahlo’s revolutionary legacy and reducing her complex identity to a marketable, apolitical brand. The core research question explores how a conceptual fashion editorial can serve as a critical methodology to reclaim her image as a powerful symbol of resistance. Through the creation of the editorial “Reframing Frida: Fashion As Resistance” this project employs a hybrid methodology of semiotic critique and creative practice. By deconstructing commercial tropes, the editorial re-embeds Kahlo’s iconic aesthetic with its original political, cultural, and personal significance. This thesis ultimately demonstrates that fashion can function as a rigorous form of academic inquiry and cultural resistance, offering a practical framework for critically re-politicizing cultural representation.
