- Activity profiles of soccer players during the 2010 World CupPublication . Clemente, Filipe Manuel; Couceiro, Micael; M. L. Martins, Fernando; Ivanova, Monika Ognyanova; Mendes, RuiThe main objective of this study was to analyse the distance covered and the activity profile that players presented at the FIFA World Cup in 2010. Complementarily, the distance covered by each team within the same competition was analysed. For the purposes of this study 443 players were analysed, of which 35 were goalkeepers, 84 were external defenders, 77 were central defenders, 182 were midfielders, and 65 were forwards. Afterwards, a thorough analysis was performed on 16 teams that reached the group stage, 8 teams that achieved the round of 16, 4 teams that reached the quarter-finals, and 4 teams that qualified for the semi-finals and finals. A comparison of the mean distance covered per minute among the playing positions showed statistically significant differences (F(4,438) = 559.283; p ˂ 0.001; 2 = 0.836; Power = 1.00). A comparison of the activity time among tactical positions also resulted in statistically significant differences, specifically, low activity (F(4,183.371) = 1476.844; p ˂ 0.001; 2 = 0.742; Power = 1.00), medium activity (F(4,183.370) = 1408.106; p ˂ 0.001; 2 = 0.731; Power = 1.00), and high activity (F(4,182.861) = 1152.508; p ˂ 0.001; 2 = 0.703; Power = 1.00). Comparing the mean distance covered by teams, differences that are not statistically significant were observed (F(3,9.651) = 4.337; p ˂ 0.035; 2 = 0.206; Power = 0.541). In conclusion, the tactical positions of the players and their specific tasks influence the activity profile and physical demands during a match.
- Effects of regular and conditioned small-sided games on young football players’ heart rate responses, technical performance, and network structurePublication . González-Víllora, Sixto; Clemente, Filipe Manuel; Martins, Fernando M. L.; Pastor-Vicedo, Juan CarlosPurpose The purpose of this original work was to analyse the effects of different formats and task conditions in regular small-sided games (SSG) and small-sided conditioned games (SSCG) on heart rate profile and tactical-technical performance (measured by Network and Team Sport Assessment Procedure) among young football players. Methods The total of 16 male elite young players (age: 11.6 ± 0.8 years; practice: 3 ± 1.4 years) were tested. Each participant played in six different formats, namely three 3-a-side games and three 5-a-side games: (i) regular SSG, (ii) attacking contentspace SSCG, (iii) defensive content-concentration SSCG. Each game lasted 5 minutes, and 3 minutes of passive recovery between games was adopted. Results Different formats did not result in statistical differences in heart rate responses. Nevertheless, significant differences were found between formats in technical performance (p < 0.05) and collective organization measured by network (p < 0.05). No statistical differences were observed between task conditions with tactical content in technical performance and collective organization. Conclusions The conditions used in this study may enable coaches/teachers to carry out a more quality and specific training, helping to understand the real effects of SSG/SSCG: smaller formats increase the tactical-technical participation, time in high intensity heart rate, and network density.
- How and why do Soccer Coaches use Small-Sided Games in the Training Process?Publication . Alves, Gonçalo; Clemente, Filipe Manuel; Malico Sousa, Paulo; Pinheiro, Válter; Lourenço dos Santos, Fernando JorgePurpose. The small-sided games (SSGs) allow to work in specificity, in accordance with the characteristics of the soccer game, the physical, technical, tactical, and psychological aspects. This study intends to understand how and why coaches use the SSGs in the training process. Methods. For this purpose, we applied a semi-structured interview. Two coaches were interviewed owing to their vast experience in high-performance training and youth training. The analysis was carried out through content analysis. We used categorization to group data with common characteristics. The category system was defined later. Results. The results demonstrate that SSGs are an integral part of the training process, allowing work in the physical, technical, and tactical aspects. The coaches interviewed argue that SSGs are an important work strategy for the articulation of the players in the sector and inter-sector of the team, on the basis of the tactical principles that they see reproduced in the competition. Conclusions. According to the interviewed coaches, SSGs are relevant as they may develop both tactical principles and physical capabilities. Applying such games during all the season allows to establish a direct relationship with specific moments that occur in official competitions.
- The effects of large-sided soccer training games and pitch size manipulation on time–motion profile, spatial exploration and surface area: Tactical opportunitiesPublication . Clemente, Filipe Manuel; Owen, Adam; Serra-Olivares, Jaime; Correia, Acácio; Bernardo Sequeiros, João; Silva, Frutuoso GM; Martins, Fernando Manuel LourençoAnalysis of the physical, technical and physiological variations induced through the use of different soccer game formats have been widely discussed. However, the coaching justification for the specific use of certain game formats based on individual and collective spatial awareness is unclear. As a result, the purpose of this study was to analyze 11 versus 11 game formats conducted across two pitch sizes (half-size: 54 m × 68 m vs full-size: 108 m × 68 m) to identify effects of time–motion profiles, individual exploration behavior and collective organization. A total of 10 amateur soccer players from the same team (23.39 ± 3.91 years old) participated in this study. Data position of the players was used to calculate the spatial exploration index and the surface area. Distances covered in different speeds were used to observe the time–motion profile. The full-size pitch dimensions significantly contributed to greater distances covered via running (3.86–5.52 m s−1) and sprinting (>5.52 m s−1). Total distance and number of sprints were also significantly greater in the full-size pitch as compared to the half-size pitch. The surface area covered by the team (half-size pitch: 431.83 m2 vs full-size pitch: 589.14 m2) was significantly larger in the full-size pitch condition. However, the reduced half-size pitch significantly contributed to a greater individual spatial exploration. Results of this study suggest that running and sprinting activities increase when large, full-size pitch dimensions are utilized. Smaller surface area half-size pitch contributes to a better exploration of the pitch measured by spatial exploration index while maintaining adequate surface area coverage by the team. In conclusion, the authors suggest that the small half-size pitch is more appropriate for low-intensity training sessions and field exploration for players in different positions. Alternatively, the large full-size pitch is more appropriate for greater physically demanding training sessions with players focused on positional tactical behavior.
