- Técnicas de medida da espessura da córneaPublication . Alves, Joana Filipa Vasconcelos de Matos; Pereira, José DiasThe concepts of intraocular pressure and central corneal thickness are interconnected, where this thickness interferes with intraocular pressure measurements, and it is necessary to correct these values based on the thickness of the cornea. Corneal thickness is directly related to ocular health and precise knowledge of it is to diagnose and monitor pathological conditions such as glaucoma. Currently, two widely used techniques for measuring corneal thickness are Ultrasonic Pachymetry, which is an invasive method and uses ultrasound, and Swept-Source, which uses a laser to create high-resolution images of the corneal surfaces and is neither invasive nor painful for the patient. The need to improve the quality of ophthalmic care, monitor eye health and promote scientific advances that benefit society in general, drives the continuous scientific research in this area and, therefore, technological evolution translates into more precise and accurate measurement. However, there is, always, a need for more research and development to improve continuously this important area of biomedical measurements.
