Fourteen correlators are measured using a standard event-plane method and a scalar-product method, and the latter method is found to give a systematically larger correlation signal. Several different trends in the centrality dependence of these correlators are observed. These trends are not reproduced by predictions based on the Glauber model, which includes only the correlations from the collision geometry in the initial state. Calculations that include the final-state collective dynamics are able to describe qualitatively, and in some cases also quantitatively, the centrality dependence of the measured correlators. These observations suggest that both the fluctuations in the initial geometry and non-linear mixing between different harmonics in the final state are important for creating these correlations in momentum space.
- Measurement of the charge asymmetry in dileptonic decays of top quark pairs in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=7$ TeV using the ATLAS detectorPublication . ATLAS collaboration (2884 authors); Aguilar-Saavedra, Juan Antonio; Amor Dos Santos, Susana Patricia; Anjos, Nuno; Araque, Juan Pedro; Cantrill, Robert; Carvalho, João; Castro, Nuno Filipe; Conde Muiño, Patricia; Da Cunha Sargedas De Sousa, Mario Jose; Fiolhais, Miguel; Galhardo, Bruno; Gomes, Agostinho; Gonçalo, Ricardo; Jorge, Pedro; Lopes, Lourenco; Machado Miguens, Joana; Maio, Amélia; Maneira, José; Onofre, António; Palma, Alberto; Pedro, Rute; Pina, João Antonio; Pinto, Belmiro; Santos, Helena; Saraiva, João; Silva, José; Tavares Delgado, Ademar; Veloso, Filipe; Wolters, HelmutA measurement of the top-antitop ($t\bar{t}$) charge asymmetry is presented using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.6 fb$^{-1}$ of LHC $pp$ collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV collected by the ATLAS detector. Events with two charged leptons, at least two jets and large missing transverse momentum are selected. Two observables are studied: $A^{\ell\ell}_{\textrm{C}}$ based on the identified charged leptons, and $A^{t\bar{t}}_{\textrm{C}}$, based on the reconstructed $t\bar{t}$ final state. The asymmetries are measured to be \begin{eqnarray*} A^{\ell\ell}_{\textrm{C}} & = & 0.024 \pm 0.015 ~\textrm{(stat.)} \pm 0.009 ~\textrm{(syst.)}, \end{eqnarray*} \begin{eqnarray*} A^{t\bar{t}}_{\textrm{C}} & = & 0.021 \pm 0.025 ~\textrm{(stat.)} \pm 0.017 ~\textrm{(syst.)}. \end{eqnarray*} The measured values are in agreement with the Standard Model predictions.
- Measurement of the electroweak production of dijets in association with a Z-boson and distributions sensitive to vector boson fusion in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} =$ 8 TeV using the ATLAS detectorPublication . ATLAS collaboration (2884 authors); Aguilar-Saavedra, Juan Antonio; Amor Dos Santos, Susana Patricia; Anjos, Nuno; Cantrill, Robert; Carvalho, João; Castro, Nuno Filipe; Conde Muiño, Patricia; Da Cunha Sargedas De Sousa, Mario Jose; Do Valle Wemans, André; Fiolhais, Miguel; Galhardo, Bruno; Gomes, Agostinho; Gonçalo, Ricardo; Jorge, Pedro; Lopes, Lourenco; Machado Miguens, Joana; Maio, Amélia; Maneira, José; Marques, Carlos; Onofre, António; Palma, Alberto; Pedro, Rute; Pina, João Antonio; Pinto, Belmiro; Santos, Helena; Saraiva, João; Silva, José; Tavares Delgado, Ademar; Veloso, Filipe; Wolters, HelmutMeasurements of fiducial cross sections for the electroweak production of two jets in association with a Z-boson are presented. The measurements are performed using 20.3 inverse femtobarns of proton-proton collision data collected at a centre-of-mass energy of sqrt(s)=8 TeV by the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider. The electroweak component is extracted by a fit to the dijet invariant mass distribution in a fiducial region chosen to enhance the electroweak contribution over the dominant background in which the jets are produced via the strong interaction. The electroweak cross sections measured in two fiducial regions are in good agreement with the Standard Model expectations and the background-only hypothesis is rejected with significance above the 5 sigma level. The electroweak process includes the vector boson fusion production of a Z-boson and the data are used to place limits on anomalous triple gauge boson couplings. In addition, measurements of cross sections and differential distributions for inclusive Z-boson-plus-dijet production are performed in five fiducial regions, each with different sensitivity to the electroweak contribution. The results are corrected for detector effects and compared to predictions from the SHERPA and POWHEG event generators.
- Observation of an Excited $B_c^\pm$ Meson State with the ATLAS DetectorPublication . A search for excited states of the Bc± meson is performed using 4.9 fb-1 of 7 TeV and 19.2 fb-1 of 8 TeV pp collision data collected by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC. A new state is observed through its hadronic transition to the ground state, with the latter detected in the decay Bc±→J/ψπ±. The state appears in the m(Bc±π+π-)-m(Bc±)-2m(π±) mass difference distribution with a significance of 5.2 standard deviations. The mass of the observed state is 6842±4±5 MeV, where the first error is statistical and the second is systematic. The mass and decay of this state are consistent with expectations for the second S-wave state of the Bc± meson, Bc±(2S).
- Simultaneous measurements of the $t\bar{t}$, $W^+W^-$, and $Z/\gamma^{*}\rightarrow\tau\tau$ production cross-sections in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 7$ TeV with the ATLAS detectorPublication . ATLAS collaboration (2884 authors); Aguilar-Saavedra, Juan Antonio; Amor Dos Santos, Susana Patricia; Anjos, Nuno; Araque, Juan Pedro; Cantrill, Robert; Carvalho, João; Castro, Nuno Filipe; Conde Muiño, Patricia; Da Cunha Sargedas De Sousa, Mario Jose; Do Valle Wemans, André; Fiolhais, Miguel; Galhardo, Bruno; Gomes, Agostinho; Gonçalo, Ricardo; Jorge, Pedro; Lopes, Lourenco; Machado Miguens, Joana; Maio, Amélia; Maneira, José; Marques, Carlos; Onofre, António; Palma, Alberto; Pedro, Rute; Pina, João Antonio; Pinto, Belmiro; Santos, Helena; Saraiva, João; Silva, José; Tavares Delgado, Ademar; Veloso, Filipe; Wolters, Helmut
Simultaneous measurements of the tt¯, W+W-, and Z/γ*→ττ production cross-sections using an integrated luminosity of 4.6 fb-1 of pp collisions at s=7 TeV collected by the ATLAS detector at the LHC are presented. Events are selected with two high transverse momentum leptons consisting of an oppositely charged electron and muon pair. The three processes are separated using the distributions of the missing transverse momentum of events with zero and greater than zero jet multiplicities. Measurements of the fiducial cross-section are presented along with results that quantify for the first time the underlying correlations in the predicted and measured cross-sections due to proton parton distribution functions. These results indicate that the correlated next-to-leading-order predictions for tt¯ and Z/γ*→ττ underestimate the data, while those at next-to-next-to-leading-order generally describe the data well. The full cross-sections are measured to be σ(tt¯)=181.2±2.8-9.5+9.7±3.3±3.3 pb, σ(W+W-)=53.3±2.7-8.0+7.3±1.0±0.5 pb, and σ(Z/γ*→ττ)=1174±24-87+72±21±9 pb, where the cited uncertainties are due to statistics, systematic effects, luminosity and the LHC beam energy measurement, respectively. The W+W- measurement includes the small contribution from Higgs boson decays, H→W+W-.
