The recognition and a precise definition of some ceramic techiques, also with the use of analythical methods, can be helpul for the differientiation of production areas and for the identification of diffusion routes. Particular attention is given to the different meanings attributed to the word ingobbio (slip) and the one is proposed wich has to be used to understand the introduction into Italy, from the eastern Mediterranean regions, of the techniques for the production of incised slipped wares at the beginning of the 13th Century. On the other hand the differences existing during the 11th-12th Centuries in the coating methods of ceramics in western Islamic world may suggest different routes for the introduction of the tin enamed used for the protomaioliche of southern Italy and for the maioliche arcaiche of central and northern Italy, particularly of Pisa.
