O presente relatório foi elaborado no âmbito do estágio curricular da Licenciatura em
Enfermagem Veterinária da Escola Superior de Biociências de Elvas. O estágio
decorreu no Hospital Veterinário AllVetCare, em Alverca, durante um período de 22
semanas, entre 4 de março e 4 de agosto de 2025. Ao longo deste período, observaram-se 705 cães, 601 gatos e 18 animais de outras espécies (incluindo coelhos, roedores, répteis e aves), onde foi possível acompanhar a rotina hospitalar, participando em três grandes áreas: consultas médicas e de enfermagem, internamento
e cirurgia. Dos 705 cães foi possível observar e participar ativamente no
acompanhamento de 1 cão com dilatação gástrica e 1 cão com dilatação-torção
gástrica. A realização do estágio contribuiu para o desenvolvimento e consolidação das
competências teóricas e práticas, promovendo uma maior autonomia e confiança no
exercício da enfermagem veterinária. Este relatório tem como objetivo descrever o
maneio clínico e cirúrgico da síndrome de dilatação-torção gástrica em cães, tendo
como particular foco o papel do enfermeiro veterinário no acompanhamento destes
pacientes. Inclui uma breve referência ao que consiste a patologia, às formas de
diagnóstico, às opções de tratamento e às medidas de prevenção. Apresenta-se
também a descrição da casuística acompanhada durante o estágio curricular, com
especial foco em um caso clínico de dilatação gástrica e um de dilatação-torção gástrica. Neste contexto, a atuação do enfermeiro veterinário é fundamental, quer na
monitorização do estado clínico do animal, quer no apoio ao médico veterinário
durante os procedimentos.
This report was prepared as part of the curricular internship for the Bachelor's Degree in Veterinary Nursing at the Higher School of Biosciences of Elvas. The internship took place at the AllVetCare Veterinary Hospital in Alverca, over a period of 22 weeks, between March 4th and August 4th, 2025. During this period, 705 dogs, 601 cats, and 18 animals of other species (including rabbits, rodents, reptiles, and birds) were observed, where it was possible to follow the hospital routine, participating in three main areas: medical and nursing consultations, hospitalization, and surgery. Of the 705 dogs, it was possible to observe and actively participate in the monitoring of 1 dog with gastric dilatation and 1 dog with gastric dilatation-volvulus. The internship contributed to the development and consolidation of theoretical and practical skills, promoting greater autonomy and confidence in the practice of veterinary nursing. This report aims to describe the clinical and surgical management of gastric dilatation- volvulus syndrome in dogs, focusing particularly on the role of the veterinary nurse in monitoring these patients. It includes a brief overview of the pathology, diagnostic methods, treatment options, and preventive measures. This paper also presents a description of the case studies followed during the curricular internship, with a special focus on one clinical case of gastric dilatation and one of gastric dilatation-volvulus. In this context, the veterinary nurse's role is fundamental, both in monitoring the animal's clinical condition and in supporting the veterinarian during procedures.
