A observação destes achados permitiu relacionar as lesões
This report was developed within the scope of the Veterinary Nursing Degree internship carried out at VetManos, Lda., between 23 February and 18 May 2026. The internship took place in a production animal veterinary setting, providing exposure to activities related to preventive medicine, animal health programmes and clinical practice involving livestock species. During the internship, 22,666 procedures were recorded, of which 99.73% corresponded to preventive medicine activities, predominantly involving bovine and ovine species. Among the activities performed, participation in two calf necropsies with a presumptive diagnosis of leptospirosis was particularly noteworthy and formed the basis of the present report. Macroscopic lesions consistent with a severe systemic disease process were observed, including generalized jaundice, haemoglobinuria, nephromegaly and hepatic alterations. These findings enabled the association of the observed lesions with the pathogenic mechanisms of bovine leptospirosis and highlighted the relevance of necropsy as a valuable tool supporting presumptive diagnosis in cases of sudden death. The internship contributed to the development of technical and scientific competencies in veterinary nursing, promoting the integration of theoretical knowledge acquired throughout the degree programme with professional practice. It can be concluded that necropsy represents a fundamental procedure for outbreak investigation, the implementation of appropriate sanitary measures and the protection of both animal and public health.
