do prognóstico clínico.
This report presents the work carried out during the curricular internship in veterinary nursing over 12 weeks at Clínica Vet+ in Montemor-o-Novo. Its main objective was to apply, in a clinical setting, the theoretical knowledge acquired over the three years of the degree, developing the competencies inherent to the functions of the veterinary nurse. In the hospital setting, the veterinary nurse performs a wide range of highly responsible duties, going far beyond technical support to the veterinary surgeon. Their main responsibilities include assessing the patient’s clinical status, monitoring vital parameters, administering treatment, carrying out diagnostic tests, and communicating effectively with the rest of the team. Nursing care for hospitalized animals includes essential areas such as fluid therapy, nutrition, pain management, and the promotion of welfare and stress reduction. The veterinary nurse’s intervention is crucial for the early detection of complications, reducing the length of hospitalization, and improving the clinical prognosis. The development of care plans and the Rule of 20 contribute to continuity of care, work organization, and response to each patient’s specific needs. In the context of hospitalization, the veterinary nurse thus plays an irreplaceable role in monitoring, comfort, and the recovery of the patient, serving as a central figure in the provision of high-quality care and in promoting the clinical stability of hospitalized animals. In this report, I also present two cases of hospitalized animals that demonstrate the importance of nursing care, detailing their full recovery.
