medicina veterinária, permitindo avaliar a função renal, identificar alterações do trato
patologias.
Urinalysis is one of the most widely used complementary diagnostic methods in veterinary medicine, enabling the assessment of renal function, the identification of urinary tract disorders, and the detection of manifestations of various systemic diseases. Its low cost, rapid execution, and widespread availability make it an indispensable tool for both the diagnosis and clinical monitoring of dogs and cats. This report was developed within the framework of the curricular internship carried out at DOVET Veterinary Clinic in Badajoz, Spain. Its main objective was to further explore the importance of urinalysis in veterinary clinical practice. In addition to reviewing the theoretical foundations, the report includes a description of the activities performed during the internship, complemented by a retrospective study based on urinalyses previously carried out at the clinic, a prospective study using samples collected during the internship period, and the presentation of two clinical cases illustrating the relevance of this examination in the diagnostic approach and monitoring of different diseases. The clinical cases presented, concerning Diabetes mellitus and Chronic Kidney Disease secondary to leishmaniasis, demonstrated the relevance of urinalysis in the diagnosis, staging, and monitoring of systemic diseases. The results demonstrated that the urine collection technique may influence several urinary parameters, highlighting the importance of selecting the appropriate collection method and interpreting laboratory findings in conjunction with the patient's clinical history, physical examination, and other complementary diagnostic tests. The role of the veterinary nurse in ensuring the quality of the pre-analytical phase is also emphasised, contributing to the reliability of laboratory results and to more informed clinical decision-making. In conclusion, urinalysis is an essential diagnostic tool in small animal veterinary medicine, playing a significant role in the early detection, diagnosis, therapeutic monitoring, and prognosis of a wide range of diseases.
