EUTANÁSIA EM CLÍNICA DE ANIMAIS DE COMPANHIA

A saúde, a segurança e o bem-estar dos animais de companhia é essencial à sua qualidade
de vida e contribui para o bem-estar da sua família. Quando os animais adoecem e os
tratamentos clínicos não resultam, ou em casos de doenças terminais /incuráveis, a
eutanásia animal, apresenta-se como um ato clínico compassivo que evita o sofrimento
prolongado e irreversível. Esta decisão é complexa, pois há que ponderar vários aspetos
e princípios éticos, legais, clínicos, e tem impacto emocional, quer nos tutores, quer na
equipa médica. O médico e o enfermeiro veterinário assumem papeis preponderantes
no acompanhamento, tomada de decisão e comunicação ao tutor, para além de avaliar
as causas, os procedimentos e os métodos de eutanásia mais adequados a cada caso
clínico. Durante o estágio, realizado na CVAV, ocorreram 10 casos de eutanásia animal,
recorrendo-se ao método de eutanásia química, com agente injetável. Entre os casos de
eutanásia acompanhados, destaca-se o caso da cadela Molly, que, apesar dos
tratamentos, observou-se uma evolução clínica desfavorável, que levou à eutanásia. A
descrição deste caso reflete o procedimento clínico adotado nos restantes casos,
permitindo a participação da aluna neste procedimento, bem como a consolidação e
aplicação prática dos conhecimentos teóricos. Durante o estágio, desenvolveram-se
outras atividades inerentes a consultas (389), cirurgias (53), colheita de amostras e
realização de exames (206), vacinações (96), terapias (31), acompanhamento de animais
internados (20), bem como deslocações a domicílios (23) e explorações agropecuárias
(33). Pode acompanhar uma variedade de animais como cães (250), gatos (100), coelhos
(3), galinhas (2), e animais de produção (865), permitido adquirir experiências nas
diferentes espécies. Considera-se que os objetivos definidos foram alcançados,
proporcionando uma experiência diversificada e enriquecedora, reconhecendo-se,
contudo, a necessidade de continuar a aprofundar e consolidar conhecimentos e
competências na área da enfermagem veterinária, numa perspetiva de desenvolvimento
profissional contínuo.
The health, safety and welfare of companion animals are essential to their quality of life and contribute significantly to the well-being of their families. When animals become ill and clinical treatments prove ineffective, suffering from terminal and incurable diseases, animal euthanasia, emerges as a compassionate clinical act which, prevents prolonged and irreversible suffering. This decision is complex, as it requires consideration of various ethical, legal and clinical aspects and principles, and has an emotional impact on both the owners and the veterinary team. Veterinary surgeons and veterinary nurses play a pivotal role in providing support, facilitating decision-making and communicating with owners. The veterinary surgeon is responsible for obtaining informed consent, as well as assessing the underlying causes and determining the most appropriate euthanasia procedures and methods for each clinical case. During the placement undertaken at CVAV, ten cases of animal euthanasia were observed, all involving chemical euthanasia through the administration of an injectable agent. Among the euthanasia cases monitored, the case of a female dog named Molly is particularly noteworthy. Despite treatment, her clinical condition deteriorated, ultimately leading to the decision to perform euthanasia. The description of this case reflects the clinical procedure followed in the other cases observed, allowing the student to participate in the process and to consolidate and apply theoretical knowledge in a practical setting. Throughout the placement, a range of additional activities were carried out, including consultations (389), surgical procedures (53), sample collection and diagnostic examinations (206), vaccinations (96), therapeutic treatments (31), monitoring of hospitalised animals (20), home visits (23), and visits to livestock farms (33). It is was possible to observe a wide range of animal species such as dogs (250), cats (100), rabbits (3), chicken (2), farm animals (865) , thus allowing acquiring experience in different species. It is considered that the objectives established for the placement were successfully achieved, providing a diverse and enriching experience. Nevertheless, the need to continue developing and consolidating knowledge and skills in the field of veterinary nursing is recognised, from a future development and continuous learning perspective.
