o bem-estar animal e influenciam negativamente a recuperação clínica.
A revisão bibliográfica
This report was developed within the scope of the Curricular Internship of the bachelor’s degree in veterinary nursing at the School of Biosciences of Elvas and is based on the internship carried out at the VETSUL Veterinary Institute, Vila Viçosa, over a period of 13 weeks. During this internship, the student actively participated in several areas of clinical practice, including preventive medicine, consultations, hospitalization, surgery, diagnostic imaging, laboratory procedures, physiotherapy, and veterinary nursing care, allowing the development and consolidation of essential technical and scientific skills. The report focuses on the monitoring and management of pain in hospitalized dogs, as pain is one of the main factors affecting animal welfare and delaying clinical recovery. Therefore, its early recognition and the implementation of appropriate analgesic protocols are essential to ensure effective patient care. The literature review addresses the physiological mechanisms of pain, methods of pain assessment, validated pain scales used in dogs, pharmacological and non-pharmacological approaches to pain management, and the role of the veterinary nurse in the continuous monitoring of hospitalized patients. To complement the theoretical framework, two clinical cases managed during the internship are presented: one involving acute traumatic pain and the other chronic pain associated with a musculoskeletal condition. These cases highlight the importance of continuous pain monitoring, the adjustment of analgesic protocols according to the patient's clinical evolution, and the essential role of the veterinary nurse in pain assessment, contributing to improved animal welfare and a more effective clinical recovery.
