Abstract(s)
Abstract: The increasing demand for public services concerning the art of dying is decisively requiring an action in Zas Town Council, smaller locality in central Costa da Morte region along Spain's Northern coast. The project of a morgue in Zas will result out of this dissertation and its research. We pretend to implement and exhibit the buildings in the surroundings, aiming at raising the prestige of these architectural works. On the one hand, the research project methodology is mainly based on case studies, but also on document analysis, photographic records and field notes. We have analysed the main features of the four most popular mortuaries in the region. These features will be the guidelines we will study and develop through our future project execution planning for building the morgue: the spatial function of place (access, rooms and visitation), the lighting (outdoor, lattice and zenith) and the transit system (public and private spheres). The results are categorised through the analysis of these elements. Besides, this comparison has shown some findings that would be better optimise and/or dispose. On the other hand, dissertation topic theoretical framework deals firstly with the meaning of death and its local particularities, and secondly with the empirical results themselves and the surroundings analysis —macro-micro level study—. This project social impact cannot be put apart. Therefore, people emotional responses concerning their passing should be remembered. Thus, the project will incorporate the cultural context that includes the social connotations and the points of view about a building where our beloved ones pass away. Consequently, these elements will be applied into the standards and into the previous works. Subsequently, empirical work has laid the basis for the creative work of the morgue project. Then, accurate architectural adaptation will depend on the application of the socio-cultural analysis of these elements: the funeral rite items (social preparation and celebration), affordable reasonable creative lighting solutions (daylight) and space-effective transit system. To sum-up, the morgue project in Zas has an environment-friendly design depending on the local particularities about passing. Comfort and creativeness finally constructs a place where farewell and solidarity find their way.
