Abstract This dissertation focuses on the main analysis of the urban evolution of Ponte de Lima over the 20th and 21st centuries. Ponte de Lima is entitled as the oldest village of Portugal and is situated in Northwest Portugal, in the district of Viana do Castelo. It is an urban network with a unique historical character which, like any other urban area, suffered the consequences of urban expansion. Therefore, justifying a thorough analysis on the fundamental aspects of appropriation and regulation of the use of the land registered in different periods. The development of the work presents the same sense of direction throughout the chapters, in which the intent is to analyse and portray the main patterns of urban growth in different periods and identify the influence of the planning and socioeconomic actions in the current configuration of the urban area. For the study of the urban form, it is necessary to invoke a set of available information which allows us to identify and interpret the various periods of influence. Consequently, the gradual breakdown of the urban area, apart from the collection of images and texts, is presented in a more elucidative way, resorting to the redesign of the cartographic elements. From the compilation of various elements, it is possible to depict the main factors that determine the growth and transformation of the urban territory of Ponte de Lima. The range of urban attainments incurred in the territory registers varied levels of influence and growth. The occupation comes from a process of affirmation and coexistence of a variety of forms, associated to a number of aspects from which the emphasized political, economical and social influences cannot be dissociated.
