- A 1.1 µA voltage reference circuit with high PSRR and temperature compensationPublication . Pereira, M. Silva; Costa, João E. N.; Santos, M.; Vaz, J. CaldinhasThis paper presents a low-power and a low output voltage CMOS Bandgap Reference Generator topology with high PSRR and a novel temperature curvature compensation method. The proposed design was implemented in a standard 0.13 μm CMOS process. The main circuit is based in an opamp based β-multiplier bandgap circuit with resistive division. The compensation method cancels out up to 2nd order non-linear terms of the BJT voltage by using the MOSFET leakage current effect. The performance of the circuit was verified by post-layout simulations. Simulated results have shown temperature coefficients as low as -4.4 ppm/°C over a temperature range of 140°C (-40°C to 100°C). In addition the circuit demonstrated a PSSR of -100 dB at low frequencies and -73 dB at 1 MHz. The current consumption is 1.1 μA at 27°C.

- 13th ERS Lung Science Conference. The most important take home messages: News from the Underground.Publication . Bikov, A; Boots, A; Bjerg, A; Jacinto, T; Olland, A; Skoczyński, SThe 13th ERS Lung Science Conference (LSC) was organised to bring academics together from all over the world to present and discuss the latest developments regarding lung infection and immunity. The conference took place in breathtaking Estoril, Portugal; however, it wasn't the beautiful surroundings that were our main motivation to attend, but instead the scientific merit of the conference and the chance to create new scientific collaborations. The scientific programme [1] was packed with the most up-to-date content in the field of lung infection and immunity and included some of the top researchers within this exciting area. Moreover, the convenient size of the LSC offered the opportunity to renew and intensify friendships and collaborations. In particular, for researchers at the start of their career, this is a great feature and we therefore warmly recommend the LSC to ERS Juniors Members!
- 1930s Sunny Coast & the Spanish Market: A blast from the pastPublication . Carvalho, CristinaThis empirical study is based on the author’s PhD thesis. It aims at rescuing from the Sands of Time the spirit of the destination under analysis, basing itself on the data collected from 1930s newspapers, besides contemporary approaches to that decade in the fields of Political History, War, Tourism, and Leisure. In 1910 the Figueiredos were led to Estoris due to the microclimate, and by 1914 the entrepreneur invested on a local project meant to erect Portugal’s 1st international resort built from scratch. The plan was accomplished even after the Republican regime made way for the military and civilian dictatorships, for as Hall defends authoritarian regimes do not repel tourists. Estoril was then propelled by the Gambling Law and, as Gibbons wrote in 1936, it soon attracted the mighty and the fallen, mainly of British and Spanish origins. This recollection begins with a summary of the delicate Iberian context between 1910 and 1939, and then refers the Sunny Coast as the unofficial stage of the Spanish Civil War, for since 1931 characters like General Sanjurjo settled as refugees. These visitors were pampered thanks to a Vice-Consulate (Cascais), a hotel managed by Galician partners (Monte Estoril), a multitude of leisure delights (Estoril), and Parede’s Radio Club. The Sunny Coast’s support to Franco soon led to rumours that drove tourists away, hence the reference to the strategies applied to overcome them. One shall finish by mentioning the current reality of equipments and the weak historic memory, whose proper recovery might allow to create a new cultural offer linked to the contemporary ‘Cascais’ destination for this neighbouring niche market.

- A 2018 overview of diuretic resistance in heart failurePublication . Jardim, S; Ramos dos Santos, L; Araújo, I; Marques, F; Branco, P; Gaspar, A; Fonseca, CAbstract Heart failure is a disease with high direct and indirect costs. Current treatment includes drugs that alter disease progression and drugs that to improve symptoms. Loop diuretics are the cornerstone of congestion relief for acute management, as well as for chronic stabilization. In heart failure patients, maximal diuretic response is reduced by many individual factors. Diuretic resistance is defined as failure to achieve effective congestion relief despite appropriate or escalating diuretic doses. Its causes include impaired delivery of the diuretic to its luminal site of action, neurohormonal activation, tubular compensatory adaptation and drug interactions. Several strategies can be employed to aid decongestion of patients with impaired diuretic response. These include salt restriction, a higher effective single dose or higher dose frequency of loop diuretics, continuous infusion of diuretics and/or sequential nephron blockade through a synergistic combination of two or more diuretics from different classes. Ultrafiltration has also been found to be another effective and safe therapeutic option and should be considered in patients with refractory diuretic resistance. Overall, there is a lack of high-quality clinical data to guide the choice of treatment strategy and therapy should be tailored on a case-by-case basis.
- 21st century Cascais:how the waves of time forged a cultural heritage also enjoyed by touristsPublication . Carvalho, CristinaThe romans were the first seafaring visitors to reach Cascais, a place where men already lived off harvesting the ocean.Throughout the centuries his proximidity to Lisbon turned it into a focal point for the military defence of the capital, and the warning of seafarers against costal perils. As a strategic landmark, Cascais was one of the first towns in Portugal to have a permanent lighthouse, and the town chosen by King Luís as the country's first costal resort. Currently, many are the cultural resources available to tourists that reflect the reformulation of facilities and heritage for the sake of tourism. A lighthouse was recently converted into first museum of its kind, and the Sea Museum displays archaeological and ethnographic items, while Tourism and services have replaced fishing as important activities of the town. the sea is also represented on artistic pavements, while formeraristocratic residences have been converted into hotels, and a conventinto a cultural centre. Folk devotion still honours Our Lady´s protection to fishermen with outdoor events, while its citadel has lost its military purpose, in order to host several "genres" of open-air initiatives. In gastronomic terms, along withfish dishes, the "Areias de Cascais" are butter cookies spinkled with sugar that also recall the town´s sandy beaches.
- 231 laparoscopic cholecystectomy in ambulatory: what results?Publication . Goulart, A; Delgado, M; Antunes, MC; Braga dos Anjos, Jntroduction: Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is the gold standard procedure for the treatment of lithiasic gallblader pathology and acute cholecystitis. Whether or not it should be done as ambulatory surgery is still being discussed. The present study aims to analyze the quality and safety of laparoscopic cholecystectomy conducted by the Ambulatory Unit of Hospital de Braga and compare the results with those from other European surgical centers performing LC as ambulatory surgery. Material and Methods: Observational prospective study of patients submitted to laparoscopic cholecystectomy in ambulatory surgery during a period of 26 months. Data regarding patients' demography, peri- and postoperative complications, surgical time, time in recovery room, and readmission rates was collected. Results: A total of 231 patients were subjected to Laparoscopic cholecystectomy in the ambulatory unit with overnight stay (time to discharge less than 24 hours). Three patients presented with intra-operative complications, which needed conversion to laparotomy, and four patients were admitted after surgery. The mean time for the procedure was 58 minutes and the mean time for recovery was 19h19 minutes. Postoperative morbidity was 7.8% with 2 nonscheduled admission having occurred. Discussion: One of the controversies regarding laparoscopic cholecystectomy as an outpatient procedure is the need for overnight hospital surveillance. In our unit, we have started LC on an outpatient basis with an overnight stay. Using this protocol, over the past two years, we have operated 231 patients and our results show that this is a completely safe technique. Conclusions: Data from the study suggests that LC is a safe technique when performed in ambulatory practice, having similar results to other european surgical centers.
