- The impact of parental divorce on children aged 7 to 10Publication . Rodrigues, Catarina Alexandra Beatriz; Almeida, TelmaBackground: Divorce can increase interparental conflicts and is a period of great transformation, including changes in the family's future. In children, the effects of divorce can lead to feelings of sadness, irritation, lack of self-esteem, anxiety, and depression. The level of inter-parental conflict will influence a healthy relationship between parents and children. Objectives: To analyze the relationship between interparental conflicts, anxiety, coping strategies, and post-traumatic growth. Participants: The sample consists of 72 children aged 7-9 years (M = 8.62, SD = 0.81). Method: Children responded to a paper protocol after signing informed consent by their parents. The participants answered the sociodemographic questionnaire, the Scale of Children's Perceptions of Interparental Conflict – version for younger children, the State-Trait Inventory for Children, the Schoolagers' Coping Strategies Inventory, and the Revised Posttraumatic Growth Inventory for Children. Results: Interparental conflicts are related to higher anxiety levels, and perceived better relationships with parents are related to lower anxiety levels. Facing parental divorce, the coping strategies used by children are more effective, as they have more personal skills to deal with their new family reality. However, in the presence of higher levels of inter-parental conflict, the coping strategies used by children tend to be maladaptive, with higher levels of anxiety. The traumatic events they are exposed to may not lead to post-traumatic growth. Conclusion: Children who have experienced parental divorce and been exposed to greater inter-parental conflict tend to have greater difficulty adapting to the situation healthily.
