- Acompanhamento de operações de avaliação de performances de ovinos de raça merina branca e pretaPublication . Gomes, Paulo MatutoThe internship consisted of monitoring the activities carried out by the National Association of Merino Sheep Breeders - ANCORME, visiting several breeders across the Alentejo, and Beira Baixa regions. ANCORME is the owner of the herd book, and the work carried out has as primary objectives, the fulfilment of the conservation and improvement of the White and Black Merino Breed. The need to implement conservation and genetic improvement programs in the White and Black Merino, as well as other autochthonous varieties, follow the decrease of interest in native breeds comparing to exotic breeds for its higher levels of performance. It is essential not to lose the native breeders because they are part of our identity and are completely adapted to our conditions of soil and climate producing, in the case of Merino, extraordinary meat, wool and milk products. In the internship, performance control operations, operations under the "Merino Parasite" project and wool evaluation were carried out. In the performance control, weighing’s were carried out at approximately 30 days and 70 days of lambs life. In the second weight, the result of the Average Daily Gains is given, combining this result with the evaluation of the animal's physical characteristics and the absence of defects, the lamb is chosen or not for breeding. In the Merino Parasite project, the resistance of the herds to internal parasites was evaluated. In the wool evaluation, the identification and elimination of animals that do not present good conditions were carried out to improve the quality of the herd and thus enhance the sector.
