- Heimat in visual communication: A design study of the german concept in the context of migration and belongingPublication . Fislage, Alexa; Kocogullari, DilayThe German term Heimat has complex historical and emotional connotations that are difficult to translate into English. Although it is often understood as ‘home’ or ‘homeland,’ the term goes beyond physical space and encompasses feelings of belonging, identity and security. In the context of migration, Heimat becomes even more complex and is often loaded with ambivalence, nostalgia or exclusion. The problem is that visual representations – from political campaigns to media images – shape the public perception of the term and can reinforce stereotypes. The project emerged from the need to critically analyse how Heimat is visually constructed and communicated, especially against the backdrop of migration and cultural diversity. Combining historical analysis and contemporary personal stories, the project examines how design, typography and visual language influence public perception. The website The f*ck is Heimat serves as a central platform and offers both a critical reflection on the history of the term and an emotional approach through lived experiences. The project demonstrates how visual communication can challenge exclusionary narratives and promote empathy. In doing so, it highlights the potential of design to transform the collective understanding of Heimat – from a controversial, sometimes divisive concept to one that supports pluralistic identities and shared cultural spaces in a globalised world.
