- Designing physical learning spaces for effective teaching & learningPublication . Dias, Moreno Bebiano de Melo; Esteves, Sofia DinisThe study of learning spaces has mostly been conducted from a financial and quantitative perspective, primarily to support planning and management. However, these studies fail to link essential features that learning environments should have to increase the effectiveness and efficiency of learning experiences, leading to fruitful learning activities, enjoyable learning experiences, and beneficial learning outcomes. Essentially, this research is conducted through interviews and online questionnaires, applied in two higher education institutions in Lisbon, to understand whether these institutions apply established criteria for designing physical learning spaces in order to achieve functional efficiency of classrooms thus meeting the needs of teachers and students in achieving effective teaching and learning goals. The study concluded that, despite some challenges, managers in these institutions are aware of, and to a reasonable extent apply, criteria for designing physical learning spaces that achieve functional efficiency in classrooms. The study confirmed that these institutions have been striving for the satisfaction of psychological, physiological, and sociological determinants at their physical learning spaces as well as meeting some of the conditions that enable informal learning. The classroom facilities also enable teachers to achieve some of the teaching and learning goals, such as availability of technologies to create and share knowledge, the ability of teachers to switch quickly between different types of instruction, such as lectures, projects, and debates.
