This research intends to evaluate the suitability in the adoption in Portugal of an option of creating a Logistics Sustainment Brigade in the Portuguese Army, bearing in mind, from a benchmarking perspective, the existence of similar models in the Armies of some NATO countries. The object of study are the logistical units of the Portuguese Army Forces System that may contribute for such Brigade, aiming to identify a model with applicability in national terms seeking to build an efficient service support in the spectrum of operations. The methodology is materialized in a study case research design, based on the interpretation of data collected by documentary research and semi-structured interviews. This investigation proved that as a result of the evolution of Logistics in Operations, the Sustainment Brigades, or similar units, are a reality in most NATO countries. However, its composition is adapted to the dimension of each country’s Land Component. It’s recognized the need in the Portuguese Army of a Command and Control structure over the units assigned to the Land Forces’ Logistic Capacity, concluding the research that a Sustainment Brigade type unit is too much for the level of ambition and size of the Force System’s Land Component.
