Abstract(s)
Periodontitis presents as a major disease of the tissues supporting the teeth. It is known that periodontitis results from the interaction between the subgingival microbiota, the imune and inflammatory response of the host and the environmental modifying factors. The bacterial plaque is closely linked with the risk of developing periodontal diseases. Ozone has been used for medicinal purposes since the last century in the treatment of several pathologies. It can present on the gaseous, aquose or oil form, and it is recognized antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, immunostimulatory, anti-hypoxic and biosynthesis characteristics. The objective of the presente work is to provide a general review of the ozone molecule and its chemical characteristics, but also about the potentialities of ozone therapy, related to the treatment of periodontal disease, using several in vitro and in vivo studies which give us information about the success or failure of its use in clinical practice.
