Abstract(s)

The object of study is Hotel Fazenda Javary, a small business in the city of Miguel Pereira, in Rio de Janeiro. Although it possessed historical, socio-cultural and political value in the region, it ended its activities between the second and third generations of the family. To achieve the objectives, we opted for a qualitative methodological approach, with descriptive and explanatory purposes, and the use of case studies as the main research strategy. The main techniques used were interviews, a questionnaire and field observation. The main results were that subjective variables directly influence the family, management and ownership spheres. The nature of the characteristics identified is mostly motivated by affection, especially regarding the use of informal controls between departments, a focus on short-term planning and resistance to succession
