Abstract(s)
Salientamos o papel do
A nossa
abrangente.
This work originates from the need to reflect upon the role of Residential Care Homes, regarding the sexualities of individuals with Functional Diversity. Our objective was to investigate how professionals working in these institutions approach this specific subject and their level of preparedness to do so. We emphasize the role of Social Work in the context of Functional Diversity, as Social Workers demonstrate a remarkable commitment to drive social change and actively engage in fostering the development of an inclusive society. The relevance of this subject increases given the scarcity of previous research, particularly faced when searching for scientific studies conducted within institutions that cater to individuals with Functional Diversity. Our investigation followed a qualitative methodology, involving semi- structured interviews based on a predefined script. We have conducted interviews with two separate groups of participants: two Technical Directors, one Social Worker and three caregivers who work directly with individuals with Functional Diversity, in Residential Care Homes. For data analysis we used a methodology based on thematic analysis, following the framework previously proposed by Braun and Clarke (2006). This analysis yielded five main themes: (A) professionals' familiarity with the topic; (B) the stance of professionals within the institutions; (C) challenges experienced by professionals; (D) practices developed and implemented to promote inclusion and discussion; (E) the importance of training for this subject. The analysis of our findings led us to the conclusion that Residential Care Homes have been developing a commendable work towards addressing the sexualities of their residents. However, there is still a long journey ahead towards achieving full inclusion and respect for the sexual needs of individuals with Functional Diversity. This research also highlights the need for a more extensive and diverse study, which will enable the extrapolation of these results to the broader population.
