Abstract(s)
Acute events of illness followed by hospitalisation constitute great risk at compromising the aerobic/fitness aptitude, strength and functional capacity, which will affect negatively daily life activities. This study aims at (1) investigating the levels of aerobics/fitness according to gender and (2) analysing the correlations between these variables and the functional capacities in clients/patients admitted to the Regional Continuing Care Network of the SESARAM. This is a quantitative, cross-sectional, descriptive-correlational study. The sample used consists of 34 clients (11 men and 23 women) with an average age of 65.7 ±13.2 respectively. All elements in the sample have been assisted by a Rehabilitation Nurse on the 5th June 2019. The social and demographic characterization as well as the functional capacities were obtained through questionnaires. The aerobic/fitness capacity and muscle strenght were evaluated through physical tests. The statistics analysis were conducted by using Mann-Whitney and spearman (RHo) correlations. Significant differences were found between men and women only in terms of muscle strenght (p=.019). As for the levels of the Barthel Index (BI), 54.5% of men and 39.1% of women were considered independent while 39.1% of men and women show little independence. The association between aerobic/fitness capacity and muscle strenght was both positive and strong (RHo =0.50, p=.016). Both components, aerobic/fitness capacity and muscle srenght, showed moderate and positive correlation according to the BI (.39 >Rho <0.47; ps<.027).Men presented better results in muscle strength when compared to women. The aerobic/fitness capacity and muscle strength are linked to higher levels of functional independence in acute illness during hospitalisation.
