Abstract(s)
The present report results from an internship carried out in a shelter home in the Oporto district, sheltering 11 children in dangerous or risk situations, between the ages of 0 and 10. It is sought in this report to reflect on an intervention that was carried out, between November 2017 and March 2018, with a group of six of the sheltered children and their respective families. Considering the fragilities diagnosed during the families’ visits to the children, it was sought to implement a plan of action, the main objective of which being to contribute to improve the interaction between the children and their families so as to turn this into a quality moment, both from the educational aspect, as well as in terms of deepening families ties. The planning of this intervention sought to respond to the following questions: How to transform the visitation period into a moment rich in learning and rewarding interactions between parents and children? How to turn the visits of the parents to their institutionalized children into moments of expression of positive affections, and consequently, of reinforcing family bonds? How to contribute to the development by the progenitors of the feeling that they can help their children acquire knowledge important to their development? Even though residential sheltering is a solution that can be prolonged over time, it is considered that permanence in that regime does not constitute the most adequate life project for a child. Thus, it is insufficient to solve momentary problems, but is necessary to project the children in the future, where, for most of them, this will be their reintegration in the family. The work carried out allowed us to conclude that the investment in family visits is a dimension to prioritize in interventions within a shelter context. Although the work developed in the Shelter Home where the internship was carried out provided learning opportunities for all the players involved (families, technicians and children), as well as the exchange of positive affections between families and their children during the visitation period, we considered that there is a long way to go as regards the investment that has to be made by both the said Shelter Home and the biological families. Knowing that parental competences are inseparable from the social opportunities parents have access to, one cannot expect their educational competencies to differ from those that led to the withdrawal of children without a deep investment in changing their living conditions and the stimuli to which they are subject.
