Abstract(s)
Concerning the agricultural year of 2008/2009, a description has been made of both the machinery and its use within the cultural schedule at Sociedade Agrícola do Rabaço, Lda. (its farmland is situated in the region of Avis – Alto Alentejo). The analysis showed that according to the cultural schedule for 2008/2009, which is thought that it will become similar in the following years, the existing machinery is clearly surpassing the need as the three powerful tractors (150 h.p., 130 h.p., 105 h.p.) are operating about 1080 hours/year together, which is in fact, a lower production level than expected. As a consequence, production costs are rapidly increasing due to the high prices of the operating tractors (from 32€/h to 43€/h). In order to make all the farm machinery profitable, particularly the three tractors, three alternative options were suggested: - adapting the cultural schedule to the existing machinery; - doing farm work outside the farmland using its machinery and getting a payment for that; - modifying the existing machinery. The first option is not economically viable when using the farm machinery. However, the two other options turned out to be economically positive, as it was cheaper using the tractors. By operating in other farms, the total amount of savings is 10.309,10€/year when following the cultural schedule. By modifying the existing machinery, the total amount of savings is 21.220,60 €/year. The option which clearly would bring more advantages is operating in other farms, as it not only reduces production costs, but it also provides an additional revenue of 129.080 €.
