Abstract(s)
Nanotechnology and its applications in cancer therapy, has sparked the interest of the scientific community. Cancer remains one of the most difficult and complex global problems to tackle, with high mortality rates, and the current clinical practice is inadequate. Despite the large number of therapeutic options, the problem lies on the lack of specificity and inherent systemic toxicity of current drugs, which translates into variable success rates and may involve high levels of physical and emotional exhaustion for patients. With the evolution of nanotechnology, a new era of drug delivery begins, using the unique and favorable characteristics of nanoparticles to improve cancer therapy. However, they also face numerous challenges and constant skepticism about their true therapeutic value. The goal of this literature review is to introduce the concepts of nanotechnology and nanomedicine, what are the main nanoplatforms and its advantages, the benefits of this approach, the advances obtained in clinical practice and the main obstacles faced by the “nano” dimension.
