- Analysis of EU investment on rural development and its impact on Portuguese rural regions in the period 2011-2021Publication . Isabel Abreu; Joaquim Mourato; Francisco J. MesiasEU's rural areas are an essential part of the European way of life, covering more than 75 % of the Union's territory and housing over 25 % of its population. However, they experience major imbalances compared to urban areas. Thus, it is important to analyse whether EU's rural development (RD) policy is effective in promoting the development of rural areas. This study uses a RD index for 9 Portuguese NUTS 3 regions, with data from 2011 and 2021. The results are then compared with the financial support delivered by EU funds and show their impact on RD in Portugal
- Measuring the Influence of Key Management Decisions on the Nitrogen Nutritional Status of Annual Ryegrass-Based Forage CropsPublication . Luís Silva; Sofia Barbosa; Fernando Cebola Lidon; José Santos-Silva; Luís Alcino ConceiçãoIncreasing nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) by improving agricultural practices and soil knowledge, and implementing precision agriculture, is essential to reduce the overuse of fertilizers and increase nutrient retention. This study aimed to optimize N management in agriculture by establishing a critical N dilution curve (CNDC) and analyzing variations in NUE and the N nutrition index (NNI) among different crops under various treatments. Using a Bayesian model, the CNDC was determined as %Nc = 3.63 × PDM−0.71. The results showed that plant dry matter (PDM) and plant N content (PNC) varied significantly with crop type and sampling moments. Strong positive correlations are presented by PDM with N uptake (NUp) (0.89) and NNI (0.88), along with an inverse correlation with critical N concentration (−0.95). The study found that crops under irrigation conditions had higher NUp and higher NNI. This study provides valuable insights into the influence of key management decisions on the N nutritional status of annual ryegrass-based forage crops. The results highlight the critical role of accurate and conscious decision-making in improving NUE and crop yields, emphasizing the complex interactions between biomass production and N dynamics in crops. The conclusions allow significant benefits to be realized, contributing to the sustainability of agricultural systems.
- Territorial Marketing in the Development of Sustainable Cities — Proposal for the Autonomous Region of PríncipePublication . Mendes, Deolésio; Jose, Ana; Mourato, Joaquim
- Tourism Development in Rural Border Territories: A “Phronetic” Approach to Threats and OpportunitiesPublication . Rafael Robina-Ramírez; Francisco Javier Castellano-Álvarez; Paulo Ferreira; Luís LouresThis study emphasises the crucial role of practical wisdom (“phronesis”) in the hotel industry, highlighting its impact on ethical behavior, operational reliability, and guest trust. The database was provided by the regional government in Extremadura and the national government in Portugal. Qualitative data from interviews and quantitative data managing from SEM-PLS were provided. In total, 175 rural hotels in Extremadura and Portugal have participated in this study. This study emphasises the significance of integrating ethical leadership with operational excellence to ensure sustainable tourism in rural border territories. It highlights the importance of practical wisdom (“phronesis”) in addressing complex ethical dilemmas while balancing cultural preservation and environmental responsibility. Key managerial practices include fostering safe spaces for ethical reflection and integrating technology with cultural sensitivity. These practices help build trust within communities and ensure long-term operational success while respecting local traditions and ecological concerns.
