- Design in startup incubators: Practices, gaps and opportunitiesPublication . Pinto, Rita de Oliveira Neves Macedo; Moreira, Bruna RuschelWe are currently experiencing two phenomena: the emergence of incubators and the growing appreciation of design as a key factor in innovation. Thus, the research question is: How can design be integrated more effectively in startup incubators in Portugal? The main objective is to understand how these incubators promote the use of design in the startups they support. To do this, we defined four specific objectives: (a) to understand the role of design in incubators; (b) to identify the challenges that incubators face when encouraging startups to integrate design into their development; (c) to compare incubators' practices with theoretical perspectives on the value of design; and (d) to present practical suggestions for improving the incorporation of design in incubators. To achieve these objectives, we carried out a literature review, semistructured interviews with six incubators located in Lisbon, Porto, Leiria, Aveiro, and Coimbra; and collected responses from nine startups via an online questionnaire. The results show that although incubators and startups recognize the importance of design, it is not always practiced to its full potential, mainly due to limited resources and a lack of internal skills. Based on these results, the study suggests how these gaps can be addressed through design, which can help increase the market impact of startups supported by incubators.
