- Exploring empathy: startup cultural contextsPublication . Magrin, Juliana Vieira; Esteves, Ana Sofia Coutinho de Almeida DinisThis research emphasizes the critical role of empathy in business, particularly within startup cultures. Despite its importance, empathy is often overlooked and underexplored in the business context, especially in startups. Traditional perspectives on empathy, such as "putting oneself in someone else's shoes," are evolving. Modern perspectives advocate for a comprehensive understanding of individuals within their unique contexts, emphasizing empathy as a strategic competency. However, the lack of a clear definition and measures of empathy hinders its effective integration into business practices, and there is limited empirical evidence regarding its impact in the business context, particularly in the startup landscape. This research adopts a mixed-methods approach, combining semi-structured qualitative interviews with managers and quantitative surveys with employees to capture the multifaceted nature of empathy in startups. The qualitative data provides deep insights into managers' experiences and challenges with implementing empathy, while the quantitative data offers broader perspectives on employees' attitudes and perceptions. The findings indicate that empathy significantly enhances team dynamics, communication, and innovation. Leaders who consistently demonstrate empathy foster inclusive environments, improving employee satisfaction and retention. Despite these benefits, challenges remain in consistently demonstrating empathy and the need for clear definitions and measures. The importance of this study lies in its potential to inform academic discourse, enriching the resilience of startups in an increasingly empathy-driven world.
