- An Updated Portrait of the Portuguese WebPublication . Miranda, João; Gomes, DanielThis study presents an updated characterization of the Portuguese Web derived from a crawl of 48 million contents belonging to all media types (2.5 TB of data), performed in March, 2008. The resulting data was analyzed to characterize contents, sites and domains. This study was performed within the scope of the Portuguese Web Archive.
- Head-movement interface for wheelchair driving based on inertial sensorsPublication . Gomes, Daniel; Fernandes, Filipe; Castro, Eduardo; Pires, GabrielPowered wheelchairs provide the only means of mobility for many people with severe motor disabilities. For those with both lower and upper limbs impairment, available interfaces may be either impossible or very difficult to use, as well as not very efficient. In this paper we propose an egocentric interface based on inertial sensors placed on the user's head. This interface is based on head movements that provide continuous direction and speed commands to steer the wheelchair, and allows an initial null-position of the head according to the natural posture of the user. However, the development of an inertial interface for driving a wheelchair presents two main challenges, namely, (1) the simultaneous movements of the head and the wheelchair, each one with its own coordinate system, and (2) the free unrestricted movement of the head. Therefore, the two coordinate systems need to be combined and several safety features are required to only ensure admissible commands. In this paper we describe the overall implementation and preliminary experiments that show the effectiveness of the proposed solution.
- How Are Web Characteristics Evolving? (poster)Publication . Miranda, João; Gomes, DanielThe Web is a hypertextual environment in permanent evo- lution. There are new technologies and Web publishing be- haviors emerging everyday. This study presents trends on the evolution of the Web, derived from the comparison of two characterizations of a web portion performed within a 5 year interval. The Portuguese Web was used as a case study. Several metrics regarding content and site character- istics were analyzed.
- Introducing the Portuguese web archive initiativePublication . Gomes, Daniel; Nogueira, André; Miranda, João; Costa, MiguelThis paper introduces the Portuguese Web Archive initiative, presenting its main objectives and work in progress. Term search over web archives collections is a desirable feature that raises new challenges. It is discussed how the terms index size could be reduced without significantly decreasing the quality of search results. The results obtained from the first performed crawl show that the Portuguese web is composed approximately at least by 54 million contents that correspond to 2.8 TB of data. The crawl of the Portuguese web was stored in 2 TB of disk space using the ARC compressed format.
Abstract: This essay approaches the Sustainment of a National Detached Force, referring to two case studies, one of the Kosovo Theatre of Operations, nowadays terminated, and one of the Central African Republic, an ongoing operation. This two different sets of operations are similar on the typology of mission, tasks and on the Force dimension, but they distinguish themselves regarding the different international organizations, where they lay, the first one inserted on NATO and the second on the UN. The methodology followed in this essay, on a first phase the attentions were on the goals definition, where it has been limited to only three logistic functions, allied with a national and international literary review of the existing publications regarding the sustainment process, extended to the referred national organizations doctrine. Subsequently, interviews were held to some of the direct intervenient on this process, which were at the Theatre of Operations and at National Territory. After collecting these testimonies, a comparative analysis process was fulfilled between the two theatres, with some conclusions and propositions being listed. The existing National Detached Forces sustainment process was considered as well defined, functional and effective, with some specifications regarding the type of international organization and the singularity of the Theatre of Operations. However, some improving possibilities have been detected, regarding the efficiency of the process, with some minor solutions relative to the acquisition and stock management process, as well as the strategic transport area.

- Trends in Web characteristicsPublication . Miranda, João; Gomes, DanielAbstract—The Web is permanently changing, with new technologies and publishing behaviors emerging everyday. It is important to track trends on the evolution of the Web to develop efficient tools to process its data. For instance, Web trends influence the design of browsers, crawlers and search engines. This study presents trends on the evolution of the Web derived from the analysis of 3 characterizations performed within an interval of 5 years. The Web portion used as a case study was the Portuguese Web. Several metrics regarding site and content characteristics were analyzed.
