- Assessing the aesthetic performance of CAD/CAM provisional restorative materials : a spectrophotometric analysisPublication . Silvério, Sónia; Gomes, Catarina; Martins, Francisco; Reis, José Alexandre; Maurício, Paulo Durão; Maté-Sánchez de Val, José EduardoAchieving color match between natural teeth and restorative materials is crucial in dentistry. Factors such as the light source, brightness, and opacity influence tooth color, determined by light absorption and scattering within the material. Advances in CAD/CAM systems have enhanced prosthodontic treatments, particularly with new temporary materials, but data on their color stability and masking ability remains limited. However, data on the color stability and masking ability of these CAD/CAM materials is limited. Telio® CAD-Temp and VITA CAD-Temp® blocks were cut into slices and polished. Composite resin specimens were prepared using a custom-designed metal resin former and light-cured. Samples were paired randomly and assigned to experimental groups based on base type and thickness (n = 30). Samples were stored in a controlled environment for 24 h before color evaluation using an EasyShade® V spectrophotometer. Color difference (ΔE) was calculated using L*, a*, and b* values. Statistical analyses included the Shapiro–Wilk test, Levene’s test, and three-way ANOVA, with post-hoc comparisons using the Bonferroni method (α = 0.05). ΔE was classified according to perceptibility (PT = 1.2) and acceptability (AT = 2.7) values.
- Color assessment of feldspathic ceramic with two different thicknesses, using multiple polymeric cementsPublication . Gomes, Catarina; Martins, Francisco; Reis, José Alexandre; Maurício, Paulo Durão; Ramírez-Fernández, María PiedadThe purpose of this study was to evaluate the color changes of feldspathic ceramics CEREC Blocs (Dentsply Sirona, Milford, DE, USA) when cemented with different luting agents, while varying the ceramic thickness. Seventy ceramic discs of feldspathic ceramic (A2 shade) were obtained with 0.5 and 0.8 mm thicknesses. Seventy composite discs (A3 shade) 1 mm in thickness were used as substrates. After being polished and conditioned, the ceramic and composite discs were cemented with different resin cements and a flowable composite: Variolink® Esthetic Light, Neutral and Warm (Ivoclar Vivadent, Schaan, Liechtenstein); RelyXTM Veneer B0.5, Translucent and A3 Opaque/yellow shades (3M Oral Care, St. Paul, MN, USA); G-aenial® Universal Flow A2 (GC Europe, Leuven, Belgium). Color difference (ΔE) was determined using a spectrophotometer. A two-way ANOVA and multiple comparisons were performed using the Bonferroni method with a 95% confidence interval. Variolink® Neutral showed the highest ΔE (15.12 ± 0.71) and RelyXTM Veneer A3 the lowest value (1.59 ± 0.33). There are no statistically significant differences between the two ceramic thicknesses for Variolink® Light (p = 0.230) and RelyXTM Veneer B0.5 (p = 0.318) cements. The feldspathic ceramic final color is influenced by the cement used and the ceramic thickness. The use of different cements in a thin ceramic has a clinically significant impact on the final esthetic result.

- Fatal haemorrhage from a lower limb varicose vein rupture: two case reportsPublication . Logrado, Diana; Gomes, Catarina; Sardinha, MárioBackground: Chronic venous disease is one of the most prevalent pathologies today. In Portugal, as in other western countries, its prevalence is high, affecting around 35% of the adult population. It is a chronic and progressive condition that, despite generally benign, may course with major complications, like severe bleeding. Case presentation: We present the cases of a 47-year-old man and of an 82-year-old woman, with chronic venous disease and obesity, whose deaths occurred from lower limb varicose vein rupture. The gathered circumstantial information, the presence of large amounts of blood on the bodies’ surfaces and clothes, and malleolus ulcers agree with the fatalities reported in scientific literature. Conclusions : These cases are peculiar, both from a forensic pathology and from a clinical perspective. We want to raise awareness among the medical community about this major complication that is linked with a disease commonly perceived as benign, but that can result in a medical emergency. We also underline the importance of educating patients to this possible outcome
- Final esthetic result of ceramic restorations cemented with different colors of cementPublication . Gomes, Catarina; Martins, Francisco; Reis, José Alexandre; Albacete-Martinez, Carlos Pérez; Maurício, Paulo DurãoObjective: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the color changes of lithium disilicate ceramics when cemented with different brands of cement by varying the thickness of the ceramic. Materials and Methods: Forty ceramic discs, shade A2, were fabricated with 0.5 and 0.8 mm thickness. Forty composite resin discs, shade A3, were also produced. The ceramic samples were cemented to the composite resin discs, with two colors of resin cement, Neutral and Warm. A spectrophotometer evaluation was made. Translucency and color change analysis was performed by calculating the ΔE. A two-way analysis of variance test and multiple comparisons were performed using the Bonferroni method with a 95% confidence interval. Results: There are statistically significant differences between the two ceramic thicknesses with different brands of cement (p < .001). In addition, using the translucency analysis it was found that there are statistically significant differences between the two ceramic thicknesses in both types of cement (p < .001). Conclusions: The use of different cementation materials on lithium disilicate ceramics appears to have little visible influence at the clinical level. Different ceramic thicknesses have a clinically visible influence on the final restoration color.
