As FALINTIL foram o principal protagonista do longo processo de 24 anos de resistência, com sucesso, à ocupação indonésia. Elas foram o elemento que uniu o povo timorense à volta de um objetivo – a sua libertação e a independência do seu território. Mas a sua ação continuou no período pós-independência, mantendo-se acantonadas para não interferir negativamente no processo político ou apoiando às sucessivas missões aprovadas pela ONU. A atuação das FALINTIL, primeiro como força de guerrilha, depois como elemento agregador em prol da reconciliação e apoio ao processo de estabilização do território por parte das sucessivas missões da ONU e por fim integradas nas Forças Armadas de Defesa de Timor-Leste, mostraram que os guerrilheiros e os militares timorenses foram um ator fundamental na conquista da independência por parte dos timorenses e na posterior construção e consolidação do Estado.This research work, following historical research, has as its main objective the analysis of the role of the Armed Forces of National Liberation of Timor-Leste (FALINTIL) in the resistance to the Indonesian occupation and its contribution to the process that led to the restoration and consolidation of the independence of Timor-Leste. FALINTIL was the main protagonist of the 24-year long process of successful resistance to the Indonesian occupation. They were the element that united the Timorese people around one goal – their liberation and the independence of their territory. But their action continued in the post-independence period, remaining in cantonments so as not to interfere negatively in the political process or supporting successive missions approved by the UN.
