- Adoption of the GITHUB platform as a data source for creating a decision support system in an agile development contextPublication . Cabeças, António; Santos, Bruna; Júnior, Laercio Cruvinel; Fernandes, AdrianaThe increasing adoption of agile methodologies in software development by companies aims to enhance productivity, quality, and responsiveness to market changes. This scenario demands tools capable of reliably monitoring the development process through easily visualisable metrics, facilitating analysis and decision-making. The present study aimed to develop a decision support system that provides essential metrics for managing agile teams, utilising data from GitHub repositories. The methodology comprised three main phases: (1) initial requirements gathering through interviews with agile software development experts; (2) analysis of responses to define a preliminary list of requirements; and (3) validation and finalisation of the tool's functional requirements through a brainstorming session. The study identified key metrics used by managers in conducting agile projects. The resulting tool was developed and tested, proving to be intuitive and easily analysable for end users. It provides fundamental metrics and assists teams in optimising their products and work processes, contributing significantly to the effectiveness of agile software project management.
- Avaliação preliminar sobre a inteligência emocional de professores de ciências em formação continuada [Preliminary assessment of the emotional intelligence of science teachers in continuous training]Publication .
- BEE-MER: Bimodal Embeddings Ensemble for Music Emotion RecognitionPublication . Lima Louro, Pedro Miguel; Ribeiro, Tiago F. R.; Malheiro, Ricardo; Panda, Renato; Pinto de Carvalho e Paiva, Rui PedroStatic music emotion recognition systems typically focus on audio for classification, although some research has explored the potential of analyzing lyrics as well. Both approaches face challenges when it comes to accurately discerning emotions that have similar energy but differing valence, and vice versa, depending on the modality used. Previous studies have introduced bimodal audio-lyrics systems that outperform single-modality solutions by combining information from standalone systems and conducting joint classification. In this study, we propose and compare two bimodal approaches: one strictly based on embedding models (audio and word embeddings) and another one following a standard spectrogram-based deep learning method for the audio part. Additionally, we explore various information fusion strategies to leverage both modalities effectively. The main conclusions of this work are the following: i) the two approaches show comparable overall classification performance; ii) the embedding-only approach leads to a higher confusion between quadrants 3 and 4 of Russell’s circumplex model; iii) and this approach requires significantly less computational cost for training. We discuss the insights gained from the approaches we experimented with and highlight promising avenues for future research.
- The benefits of internationalization in higher Education. The experience in portuguese polytechnics.Publication . Mourato, JoaquimThe European Commission [4] states that each Member State should adjust its national strategies to enhance its potential and international presence and attract talent. Account must be taken of both the national skills shortage and the lack of intercultural skills and the knowledge and research needs of their developing partner countries. Globalization is a process of great expansion, irreversible and with deep implications in all areas. This process will result in new opportunities and new challenges for the next generations of students and teachers looking to develop in an increasingly interdependent context. The Portuguese polytechnics, through the implementation of a concerted internationalization strategy between the institutions, have already achieved significant results in terms of international affiliations, international student and teacher and non-teaching staff mobility, joint programs and degrees and joint research projects. The internationalization of Portuguese higher education institutions (HEI) in recent years confirms the trend towards globalization of higher educa
- Extended- Range Marine Unmanned Surface Vehicles for Border Surveillance MissionsPublication . Fernandes, J. F. P.; Branco, P. J. Costa; Marat-Mendes, R.; Póvoa, R.; Teodoro, P.; Neves, J.; Marques, H.; Pinheiro, P.; Afonso, P.; Serrano, D.; Assunção, M.This work focuses on the development of extended-range marine unmanned surface vehicles (USV) for border surveillance missions. USVs present many advantages for marine applications due to their energy-saving capabilities and lack of in-board pilot needs. Nevertheless, due to their small scales, USVs often present reduced mission ranges. In order to overcome this handicap, this work proposes the application of innovative energy management strategies to optimize the available energy during one mission. This solution is based on path and speed optimizations, taking into account the most probable weather and sea conditions, to define a mission plan. The proposed energy management optimization is supported by the USV simulation model. This model is calibrated and verified with two experimental tests: one in an indoor swimming pool and the other in an outdoor enclosed harbour. Applying the proposed optimization strategy results in energy savings between 10 and 35.9%, subject to the maximization of mission time. This work is carried out within the international project SEMS4USV, supported by Frontex.
- Improving Music Emotion Recognition by Leveraging Handcrafted and Learned FeaturesPublication . Lima Louro, Pedro Miguel; Redinho, Hugo; Malheiro, Ricardo; Panda, Renato; Pinto de Carvalho e Paiva, Rui PedroMusic Emotion Recognition was dominated by classical machine learning, which relies on traditional classifiers and feature engineering (FE). Recently, deep learning approaches have been explored, aiming to remove the need for handcrafted features by automatic feature learning (FL), albeit at the expense of requiring large volumes of data to fully exploit their capabilities. A hybrid approach fusing information from handcrafted and learned features was previously proposed, outperforming separate FE and FL approaches on the 4QAED dataset (900 audio clips). The results suggested that, in smaller datasets, FE and FL could complement each other rather than act as competitors. In the present study, these experiments are extended to the larger MERGE dataset (3554 audio clips) to analyze the impact of the significant increase in data. The best obtained results, 77.62% F1-score, continue to surpass the standalone FE and FL paradigms, reinforcing the potential of hybrid approaches
- Intelligent Fault Diagnosis of Marine EquipmentsPublication . Mendonça, L. F.; Vieira, S. M.; Sousa, J. M. C.The automatic and intelligent diagnosis of faults in marine equipment is a task that is considered to be of great importance considering the numerous tasks that are associated with professionals working on ships. The possibility of including automatic and intelligent processes on a ship makes it possible to monitor equipment more effectively and make more informed decisions. This approach has received a lot of attention in the academic and industrial fields as it can offer considerable economic and safety advantages. Some fault diagnosis approaches can be found in the literature, where mathematical and control theory models are taken into account. However, in complex processes not all their characteristics are always known exactly, so mathematical modelling of processes is an extremely difficult task. Fault diagnosis can therefore be based mainly on data or heuristic information. The inherent characteristics of fuzzy logic theory make it suitable for processing this type of information, which is why it will be used to model processes and diagnose faults in a marine equipment valve. The fault diagnosis architecture proposed in this paper is based on analysing the discrepancy signals obtained between the outputs of the fuzzy models and the process data under study. These discrepancies, the residuals, are indicative of equipment fault. The proposed fault diagnosis architecture uses an intelligent decision-making approach to indicate the occurrence of faults. In this paper, this architecture will be used to diagnose abrupt faults in a marine equipment valve.
- An optimisation-based approach to reduce fuel consumption and emissions from shipping navigationPublication . Silva, S. Ribeiro e; Moreira, M. BentoThis study presents an optimisation-based approach to reduce fuel consumption and emissions from shipping navigation. The main objective is to improve energy efficiency and simultaneously turn a case-study vessel compliant with Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) proposed by IMO. This optimisation module has been devised as part of a new robust integrated real-time digital solution that will involve a significant number of both technical and operational measures in practice aiming to optimise operational efficiency (during navigation and port calls). Namely, the tool will be capable of situational awareness and decision support to reduce fuel consumption and Green House Gas (GHG) emissions from shipping and must be combined with intrinsic vessel systems to improve vessel hydrodynamic performance, resulting also in improved vessel safety and widening of the operational weather window
