- Development and psychometric properties of the Therapeutic Relationship Assessment Scale‐NursePublication . Coelho, Joana Catarina Ferreira; Sampaio, Francisco Miguel Correia; Nogueira, Maria José Carvalho; Sequeira, Carlos; Lleixà Fortuño, Maria del Mar; Roldán Merino, JuanIntroduction: The therapeutic relationship (TR) is essential to providing psychiatric and mental health nursing care. Nevertheless, no assessment tools exclusive for assessing nursing TR were found in the literature. Aim: To describe and evaluate the psychometric properties (reliability and construct validity) of a scale that allows assessing the quality of TR established between the nurse and the patient. Method: A survey method was adopted, using a convenience sample of 356 mental health nurses. Internal consistency was assessed by Cronbach's alpha and Omega index. Results: A total of 221 mental health nurses participated in the study (response rate = 62.08%). The scale's final structure has 25 items. Cronbach's alpha was 0.93, ranging from 0.78 to 0.88 for each of the factors. The cumulative variance explained in a four-factor structure was 71.12%. Discussion: The Therapeutic Relationship Assessment Scale (TRAS)-Nurse presents good psychometric properties. In the light of Benner's theory, it can be an useful tool for novice nurses to better understand what aspects they should pay attention to for establishing a successful TR. Implications for Practice: Mental health nurses can use the TRAS-Nurse, thus having a scale available that allows them to self-assess the quality of TR they establish with their patients.
- Development and Psychometric Properties of the Therapeutic Relationship Assessment Scale–Patient (TRAS‐Patient)Publication . Coelho, Joana Catarina Ferreira; Ribeiro, Joana Isabel Ferreira; Ribeiro, Ana Rita Martins; Trindade, Ana Carolina Gonçalves; Sequeira, Carlos; Roldán Merino, Juan Francisco; Moreno Poyato, Antonio Rafael; Sampaio, FranciscoThe therapeutic relationship plays a crucial role in nursing care for people with mental illness. Adopting a systemic and person‐centred approach that considers the individual experiences and needs of the person is paramount. However, no instruments were found in the literature designed to evaluate the nurse–patient therapeutic relationship from the perspective of a person with mental illness. This study aimed to develop and evaluate the psychometric properties of an instrument for assessing the quality of the nurse–patient therapeutic relationship from the patient's perspective. An e‐Delphi study was conducted to develop the assessment tool, and a psychometric study was carried out to examine its psychometric properties. The sample comprised 240 adults with mental illness. Internal consistency was assessed using Cronbach's alpha and the Omega coefficient. The final structure of the assessment instrument included 24 items distributed across two factors, explaining 64.2% of the variance. Cronbach's alpha was 0.94, and the Omega coefficient was 0.96. The intraclass correlation coefficient was 0.84 (95% CI: 0.66–0.92). The therapeutic relationship assessment scale (TRAS‐Patient) shows good psychometric properties. This is a relevant tool for assessing the quality of the nurse–patient therapeutic relationship from the patient's perspective, thus promoting a patient‐centred approach and responding to the patient's needs. Mental health nurses can access a tool for evaluating the nurse–patient therapeutic relationship centred on disciplinary knowledge. This enables patient involvement in care, enhanced care and person‐centred practice.
- The effectiveness of positive mental health programs in adults: A systematic reviewPublication . Teixeira, Sónia Manuela Almeida; Coelho, Joana Catarina Ferreira; Sequeira, Carlos; Lluch i Canut, Maria Teresa; Ferré-Grau, CarmeA systematic review was conducted. So, electronic database including CINAHL, Embase, MEDLINE, Pubmed, Scopus and Cochrane-Central were explored in January 2017 and in October 2017. The aim of this systematic review is to identify, appraise and synthesize the best evidence for the effectiveness of programmes of positive mental health in adults. Mental health is regarded as an ideal functioning state of the human being, which emphasizes the relevance of promoting the person's qualities in the optimization of their potential. Mental health is not inert and definitive but a dynamic and variable state. Studies were reviewed and data extracted by two independent reviewers using Joanna Briggs Institute standardized critical appraisal and data extraction instruments. Six studies met the inclusion criteria for the analysis. However, a meta-analysis could not be performed. The results suggest that positive mental health programmes improve adults' mental condition, although there is neither evidence of content formalization nor of programme sessions criteria. The review findings indicate that interventions promoting positive mental health of young adults can be implemented effectively in community settings with various programmes and results.
- Translation, cultural adaptation and evaluation of the psychometric properties of the Hamilton Anxiety Scale among a sample of Portuguese adult patients with mental health disordersPublication . dos Santos, Eugénia Raquel Pinheiro; Coelho, Joana Catarina Ferreira; Carvalho Ribeiro, Isilda Maria Oliveira; Sampaio, FranciscoBackground Only a few anxiety assessment tools that nurses may administer are validated forthe Portuguese population exist in the literature. Thus, this study aimed to translate and culturally adapt the Hamilton Anxiety Scale for the Portuguese population and assess its psychometric properties in a sample of adult people with mental health disorders. Methods This psychometric study uses a convenience sample of adult patients with mental health disorders. Results The confrmatory factor analysis confrmed the two factors of the original version of the tool. The internal consistency (Cronbach’s alpha) was high, at .92, as well as the inter-rater reliability (intraclass correlation coefcient) (.91). Conclusions The validity and reliability of the instrument are supported. However, the Hamilton Anxiety Scale should be used cautiously in the Portuguese population because the correlation with the “Anxiety State” subscale of the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory is not statistically signifcant.
